About the client

Our client builds software for actuaries, helping them work with data and predictive models. You’ll join a small engineering team working closely with the founding team. The product uses Rust on the backend, React and TypeScript on the frontend, and AWS infrastructure.

About the role

You’ll build features across the application, from understanding a user’s problem to releasing and improving the solution. That means working on interfaces, backend services, and the connections between them.

This role suits someone who enjoys working close to the product, asks questions when requirements are unclear, and can make progress without waiting for a fully specified ticket.

Responsibilities

You’ll work with the founder and other engineers to decide how features should work and carry them through development and release.

• Build product features using Rust, React, and TypeScript.

• Develop APIs and backend logic alongside the interfaces that use them.

• Make data-heavy workflows easier to understand and navigate.

• Break down requirements into manageable tasks and communicate implementation trade-offs.

• Write tests, review code, and investigate bugs across the application.

• Address performance, usability, and error handling as part of feature development.

• Follow up after release and improve features based on feedback.

• Document important decisions and communicate progress clearly in an asynchronous team.

Qualifications

You should have experience shipping production applications and be comfortable taking responsibility for a feature across the stack.

• Strong experience with React and TypeScript.

• Backend development experience, including APIs, data persistence, and application testing.

• Experience with Rust, or a strong foundation in another backend language and a willingness to become productive in Rust.

• Experience taking features from initial requirements through release.

• Good judgment about when to move quickly and when to invest in a more durable solution.

• Attention to user experience, including loading states, errors, and edge cases.

• Clear written and spoken English.

• Comfort working independently in a small team where priorities and requirements can evolve.

Nice to have

The following experience would help you get familiar with the product and its users.

• Production experience with Rust.

• Experience with data visualization, analytical software, or complex user workflows.

• Familiarity with insurance, actuarial work, or financial products.

• Experience working asynchronously with a distributed startup team.
