About the Client
Fintech leader Mercado Pago dominates digital payments across Latin America. In 2021 it bought Chilean POS specialist Redelcom, inheriting a Ruby-on-Rails monolith that already served 65 000+ merchants. Across the wider region, Mercado Pago ships >1 million smart terminals per quarter—scale that demands bullet-proof uptime.
The Opportunity
The mandate: re-platform Redelcom’s Rails codebase into Mercado Pago’s Golang micro-service mesh without a single minute of merchant downtime, all while adding support for QR-payments and next-day settlement.
The Solution
Zone-Defense Refactor – Stripped the 220 k-LOC Rails app into 11 bounded-context services, exposing gRPC + REST endpoints.
Blue/Green & Canary Kicks – Built GitLab-CI pipelines with feature flags; traffic was shifted 10 % at a time until 100 %, ensuring zero-downtime cut-over.
Peak-Load Conditioning – Added Kafka event streams and horizontal-autoscale pods, doubling throughput headroom to 2 k TPS.
Omnichannel Scoreboard – New reconciliation service aggregated e-commerce + POS sales, surfacing real-time dashboards for 65 k merchants.
Defence-in-Depth Hardening – Implemented tokenised PAN storage, HSM-backed signing and enclave-sealed secrets to meet PCI DSS v4.
The Impact
KPI | Before | After | Value-Add |
---|---|---|---|
Merchant onboarding latency | 48 h | 30 h | Faster revenue capture for SMEs |
Peak TPS on POS API | 1.2 k | 2.0 k | Ready for Black-Friday spikes |
Platform availability | 99.90 % | 99.98 % | Aligns with Mercado Pago SLA |
